For the next 15 years or so, David was engaged
in a wide variety of occupations and ministries. He taught secondary school, held a number
of other secular jobs, attended several secular and Christian colleges, opened and ran a
small training center for missionaries, and traveled the U.S. booking an evangelical
program on radio and television. During this time he also applied to be a missionary to
Southeast Asia. Wryly, he would later recount to his followers: "My own denomination turned me down and wouldn't let me be a missionary. [They] said I was sick, had too many children, and besides, I was too old to finish my education. So I figured, 'Well, I guess there's only one thing I can do -- try to get other people to do it' -- and here you are!" [14] |
