An Iconoclastic Revolutionary

"In heart and mind and body I am a non-conforming non-traditional iconoclastic revolutionary rebel who needs freedom of every kind!"

While David faithfully instilled in his followers the basic truths of the Christian faith and doctrine, he also advanced some tenets that were by any standards quite shocking. David knew that promoting such beliefs would virtually guarantee that both he and the Family would remain a source of controversy, distinctly separate from mainstream Christianity. However, he was by nature an extremist and iconoclast, and if he was convinced that God was leading him in a certain course of action, nothing could deter him. He would write:

"In heart and mind and body I am a non-conforming non-traditional iconoclastic revolutionary rebel who needs freedom of every kind!" [57]

"I'm here to start a [spiritual] revolution! I'm here to turn that System upside-down and do what Jesus did, and show you what real Christianity is and what real religion is! And it's not going to church on Sunday! ... I'm not a reformer. I don't want to just change things, I want to turn them upside-down and inside out!" [58]

"I believe in obeying God if it means facing all Hell and high water and turning the world upside-down, including a few people, or we wouldn't be here! I'm willing to go to any extreme to get the job done, and I'm not about to begin to let anybody stand in the way." [59]

"I love a confrontation! I love to bring things out in the open and hit things right on. … I'm a fighter!" [60]

"Whatever I do, I do with all my heart, all the way. There's no halfway with me." [61]

"I like the shock treatment! I like to shock people, challenge them, stir them up, arouse them, awaken them out of their lethargy, even cause them to explode over something I've said -- at least get them to do something to spur them into action one way or the other." [62]

"As my grandfather used to say: 'If you'll just get on fire for God, the world will come out to see you burn!'" [63]

"We didn't get here by pussyfooting around and soft-pedaling our controversial, shocking, different doctrines!" [64]

"The [Family] did not begin with our trying to please people and giving them only what they were able to believe and accept." [65]

"I don't care if I make everybody mad and all of you mad too, as long as I make God glad and I preach His Word!" [66]
